Hip Replacement
Conventional Total Hip Replacement is a very successful procedure for the treatment of Hip arthritis. This procedure involves removing the worm head of the femur and replacing it with a metal ball and stem in the shaft of the femur and a plastic cup in the acetabulum. Usually both are typically anchored to the bone by “bone cement”.

The Plastic itself is insert but as the metal rubs against the plastic, tiny particles of the plastic are worn away. For younger, more active people needing a hip replacement there is a high chance that a traditional hip replacement will wear out during their lifetime and needs to be revised. In THR, there is a small head in plastic, which reduces the hip movement by seventy
percent than normal.

To overcome these problems in younger, more active patients requiring hip replacement, a different type of implant was needed and developed.

Anatomy of the Hip Joint

The hip joint is a ball and socket joint. The joint is made up of the head of the femur (the ball) which fits into the acetabulum (the socket) fig-1
In healthy hip joint, both the head of the femur and the acetabulum are covered with cartilage, a smooth surface which allows the joint to move freely, and absorbs the impact that results from activities such as walking and running. When there is a damage to cartilage, bone comes in contact with bone. This cause restriction of movement and agonizing pain. fig-2
